The National Pro Grid League (NPGL) held their semi-finals here in Charlotte, NC. Being part of athletic services for the event gave me access to some of the most elite athletes across the globe. I worked on pros from across the United States, as well as international athletes from Australia, England, Canada and Sweden. These bodies were built for strength (type II muscle fiber heavy) and needed the sports massage, stretching, and flushing of the major muscle groups throughout the competition.
Taste of Charlotte is an event where the restaurants in the city bring out their best. Well, a handful of Charlotte's massage therapist community brought their best to the event too. Chair massages were on the menu at our booth and patrons really enjoyed it! People often go about there day carrying stress, injuries, and burdens that come with life. During this three day event, we served those problems.
Tour Davita was a four day event where 600 cyclists from around the country biked to support programs and awareness for kidney dialysis. For three days therapist from around NC came to provide post event massage therapy. Quite a few of the riders' bodies were banged up from the 70+ miles they rode each day. Thanks to great hands, they were able to get some relief for the next day. Check out the smiles!
Raleigh continues to host one of more well know triathlon events. While this year's temperature was milder than last year, the physical demands placed on these athletes didn't drop one degree. During the two day expo, I focused mostly on stretching and just getting the body ready to fire off for the day of the event. Post race, a lot more athletes were suffering for dehydration and salt lose. Muscle cramps were abundance that day, and I did my part to help athletes recover from a grueling event.
One of the most well known names for triathlons is the Ironman. Raleigh, NC was host to a half Ironman race where triathletes faced 12.1 miles of swimming, 56 miles of bicycling, and 13.1 miles of running. I was fortunate to be working athletic services with AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) S.W.A.T. team. During the two day expo we provided national and international athletes with pre-event sports massages, stretching, and focused work on areas given them problems. The day of the race, athletes faced high humidity and scorching temperatures. After crossing the finish line, athlete's fatigued bodies were brought back to life with techniques meant to flush the locked muscles.
This year I had the honor of being the sports massage therapist for the Cam Newton 7 vs7 tournament. High school football teams from across the southeast region gathered to determine who would be #1. During the event I provided a variety of stretching techniques and hands on treatments to these young athletes. The event gave prospective players the true athlete experience in regards to pre and post event care. Nothing like getting a shout out from one of the players you worked on as they catch a touchdown pass!
This year, Davita brought there great bike tour to the state of Tennessee. I traveled to the west to take care of the many employees and friends who rode in this great event. The event was a three day long bike tour, culminating to a bike ride of about 180 miles for the cyclists. With such distances and short recovery time, athletic services placed a key part in keeping participants moving. Lower body tightness accounted for a lot of these participants' woes. At the end of the day, I served up smiles and mobility.
I hit the road to Denver, NC for my first powerlifting competition. The Procrastinator's Challenge was an event hosted by Jennifer Thompson. This USA powerlifting event, brought together some of the areas strongest individuals across the state. The day consisted of three events: deadlift, bench press, and squat. I had the opportunity to catch some athletes before the event to help warm up the muscles for explosion. This event allowed me to see an individual in the 63 kg weight class squat 565 lbs and deadlift 605 lbs. Everyone should take the opportunity to go to one of these events. Check out my photo with NC's own World Record Holder, Jennifer Weed Thompson!
The Master's Tour brought crossfitters from across the state and southeast region to Crossfit Unite. The games were part of a national tour which allows for a more national competitive feel. I had the great opportunity to provide athletic services before, during, and after the competitive rounds. I specifically remember working on a mid trapezius, rhomboid issue with a participant. Worked on him briefly to have him return with a big smile and thank you for removing the pain from his shoulder. All in a days work!
